Learn a new skill, meet new pals and get the buzz of playing in a BIG drumming group!
In this 12 week block, we'll teach you the skills to be able to play several popular Brazilian carnival grooves (samba/samba reggae) as well as some more traditional and modern grooves (coco/maculele/funk) adapted for bateria (drum section of a samba school). We'll also learn some songs to accompany each rhythm.
At the end of the block there will an opportunity to perform and show off our new skills (performing isn't mandatory but trust us - it's loads of fun!)
Suitable for all levels - with a wide range of authentic Brazilian instruments to choose from, we have something for everyone - try something new or develop your skills in a particular instrument if you've attended before.
PLEASE NOTE - THIS IS A 12 WEEK BLOCK OF WORKSHOPS RUNNING FROM 11TH SEPT-4TH DECEMBER (NO CLASS ON 16TH OCTOBER) HOWEVER DUE TO LOGISTICAL REASONS THE BOOKINGS WILL BE RELEASED IN 4 WEEK BLOCKS.
Tutor: Roddy Dickson
Roddy Dickson is a percussionist, teacher and band leader from Glasgow. He has studied with some of the best musicians in the world of Brazilian music and has over 20 years of experience teaching and performing in the UK, Europe and Brazil. As well as being the main musical director with Glasgow's own Sambayabamba, Roddy is a regular guest tutor for other bands on the UK carnival scene. Roddy is adept at catering to all levels of experience and has introduced countless people to Brazilian percussion.
Instructions
Loose clothing and comfortable footwear is advised. Drumming can be a thirsty business so you might want to bring something to drink (no alcohol please). Please try not to arrive before 6.45 as there might not be anyone there to let you in.
