We are excited to announce our next Guided Book Tour.

This involves a different kind of BCD… a Book Club [at your] Diveshop!

Explore our blue planet from a new angle with a three-week discussion-based course led by Seattle Dive Tours’ Visiting Professor of Ocean Literature, Kelly Bushnell (@dr.kelpy)!

Our Spring Guided Book Tour selection is Bonnie Tsui's Why We Swim, our first foray into nonfiction and an opportunity to create some space for reflection.

Sessions will take place Saturday May 28, June 4 and 11

Your $70 ticket includes a copy of the novel shipped to you with a Reading Guide custom-designed for SDT, bookmark, custom Seattle Dive Tours marine life slate created by one of our team and of course entrance into the course! (Ticket is $50 if you are an e-book reader or already have the book.)

After the success of our last four Guided Book Tours, we’re also continuing our additional sessions to accommodate more time zones! Participants will still be limited to 15 maximum, so don’t delay in securing your spot! (If you would like to attend but cannot afford the book right now, please let us know, as there is a fully-sponsored place available.)

About the novel:

We swim in freezing Arctic waters and piranha-infested rivers to test our limits. We swim for pleasure, for exercise, for healing. But humans, unlike other animals that are drawn to water, are not natural-born swimmers. We must be taught. Our evolutionary ancestors learned for survival; today, swimming is one of the most popular activities in the world. Why We Swim is propelled by stories of Olympic champions, a Baghdad swim club that meets in Saddam Hussein’s former palace pool, modern-day Japanese samurai swimmers, and even an Icelandic fisherman who improbably survives a wintry six-hour swim after a shipwreck. New York Times contributor Bonnie Tsui, a swimmer herself, dives into the deep, from the San Francisco Bay to the South China Sea, investigating what it is about water that seduces us, and why we come back to it again and again.

An immersive, unforgettable, and eye-opening perspective on swimming—and on human behavior itself.

About Dr. K: Kelly P. Bushnell, PhD, is a professor, writer, and ocean advocate specializing in ocean literature, history, and culture. When she’s not teaching, you can find her rowing a wooden boat around Puget Sound or underwater with the Seattle Dive Tours gang! Catch up with her at @dr.kelpy.
