Class Description

This is more than just an academic class on how to paint a portrait. Legendary painter and illustrator Greg Manchess will guide students through the process of not only how to create a likeness but also how to bring that likeness into a painting that has character and can tell a greater story. Whether you want to paint traditional portraits, narrative paintings, or focus on faces within illustrations, Greg will help you bring your visions to the next level. Students will sharpen their understanding of the fundamental issues of portraiture: capturing a likeness, understanding structure, light and color. The class will also cover how composition, expression, body language, and narrative moment must all be brought together in order to create an evocative artwork.

Greg works in oil, watercolor, and acrylic as well as pencil and charcoal. Students may also work digitally.

Towards the end of the semester a special industry guest will visit the class and look at student work.

After taking this class students will also receive the option of a free profile on the Alumni Portfolios page. Visit the Alumni Portfolios page and type a teacher's name into the search bar to see some of the artists who studied with that teacher.

What students are saying about studying with Greg

"Taking Greg's class was the best decision I made last year, hands down. Not only did I make friends with a whole group of artists (we still meet regularly and chat, and there's always support if anyone needs it), but I found that Greg just understands so well how to meet everyone where they need it. His feedback feels very individually and personally catered to each student, and helps you to grow where you want to grow. I truly can't recommend his class enough."
