Overview
Celebrate the beauty of British garden birds through expressive watercolour painting, inspired by the detailed illustrations of John James Audubon. This immersive six-week course guides you through observational sketching, colour layering, and texture techniques to create elegant bird-themed artwork. With a maximum of eight students per class, you’ll enjoy focused guidance and a warm, supportive learning environment. *All necessary materials and equipment will be provided by the studio, just bring your creativity! *
Learning Aims
• Explore Audubon’s illustrative style and its influence on nature-inspired art
• Observe and sketch a range of British garden birds
• Mix complementary watercolours and experiment with texture-building techniques
• Create a cohesive series of expressive bird-themed watercolour paintings
Weekly Breakdown
Week 1: Introduction to Audubon and studying garden birds from reference
Week 2: Exploring bird anatomy and expressive line drawing
Week 3: Developing watercolour texture focusing on bird anatomy
Week 4: Planning composition and creating background washes
Week 5: Adding texture, layering, and fine details
Week 6: Final refinements and extending your series

Course Planning & Teaching
Our courses are thoughtfully designed and taught by Kitty, Creative Director and Founder of Springwood Barn. A fully qualified teacher with 17 years of experience, Kitty is fully insured, certified in First Aid, and holds an enhanced DBS check, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all learners.
Each project introduces students to a renowned artist and their creative influences, encouraging personal interpretation and creative growth. By drawing from both historical and contemporary sources, students build technical skill and artistic confidence, culminating in a unique and expressive final artwork.
This structured approach balances technical learning with creative autonomy, empowering students to experiment, develop their own style, and grow in their artistic practice.

Tea and Coffee will be provided during the session including a home baked treat.
Arrival
Please arrive at least 5 minutes before the session starts to settle in and prepare for your workshop.

On-site parking is available. The Studio is located on Petworth Road, directly opposite Holdfast Lane. Signage will be in place on the day of the event. Please follow the signs to reach the barn. For further details, kindly refer to the location and map information provided.
