An exciting special opportunity to examine close up the tomb of the founder of the Tudor dynasty. Looking at how much of the tomb now in St Davids Cathedral is the one actually brought from Greyfriars in Carmarthen, and how much was built new.
Edmund Tudor's son became Henry VII, his grandson was Henry VIII and his great grand daughter was Elizabeth I, who legislated for "a Bible in Welsh in every village in Wales". Emerita Professor Madeleine Gray has been conducting research, not just on the life and death of Edmund, but also on the actual tomb in the cathedral. Prof Gray will address questions like: What is it made of? and why? He died in Carmarthen, so why is he buried in St Davids? was there an earlier tomb? Prof Gray will also examine the legacy of "the noble Lord Edmund" and look at the evidence of Tudor propaganda around the tomb.
This event will be of interest to anyone interested in the Tudors, where they came from, their place in the history of Pembrokeshire. And also in the life and works of the Tudor dynasty.
Some of the early Welsh Bibles commissioned by Elizabeth I will also be on display in the Cathedral.
Tickets for the Talk at the tomb are £10 either online on this link - or from the Cathedral shops on the day.
Gather at the tomb at 2pm on Saturday 25th April.
Special Offer
And there's a special offer for those who attend. On a recent clear out of an old Cathedral storage space, we found some of the brass rubbings of the Edmund Tudor brass rubbings that used to be sold in the Cathedral shop after brass rubbing was stopped. They are not all in very good condition, but they are full sized to the brass on the tomb. These will be sold on 25th April to those attending the Talk. They are on the basis of when they're gone they're gone (literally!). They will be £15 each and to be bought and collected on Saturday 25th April.
Thank you for booking for the event on recent research on the Tomb/s of Edmund Tudor.
And we are delighted to say that we will be selling on the day full length copies of the brass rubbing from the top of the tomb. These have only recently come to light and are not in pristine condition. They will be sold at £15 each. Purchases can be made on the day or purchased online in advance and collected on 25th April.
There are a very limited number of these brass rubbings available.
