What Makes a Good Garden? with Edward Flint - IN PERSON OPTION

Details

Gardens come in all shapes, sizes and styles, but what makes a successful garden? Edward Flint’s philosophy on gardening combines traditional horticultural wisdom with a profound appreciation for the emotional and sensory experiences of gardens.

Join us for an inspiring afternoon as he explores the heart of good gardening—not just as design, but as a living craft. In this richly illustrated talk, Edward will delve into:
• Companionable planting and the art of plant relationships
• Balancing wildness with structure for lasting beauty
• Designing for emotion, seasonality, and the gardener’s presence
• Lessons from historic gardens and natural landscapes

Speaker: Edward Flint

With over 20 years experience lecturing at the renowned English Gardening School at Chelsea Physic Garden, Edward is now one of the most popular speakers at Great Dixter, where he helped develop the acclaimed ‘Art & Craft of Gardening’ courses. His talks are informal, lively, practical, irreverent, and fun. His earlier career included designing and building gardens across the UK and Europe, following an informal but formative apprenticeship at Great Dixter. However, Edward has always remained a true hands-on gardener, and currently serves as Head Gardener at a private family estate on the Kent/Sussex border.
