Understanding the Feral Pony in Its Natural Environment
Join the British Horse Society and the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust for a unique evening walk through the beautiful surroundings of Bellever Forest on Dartmoor, where we'll explore the fascinating lives of Britain's feral ponies.
Before a feral pony can thrive in a domestic home, it's important to understand where it comes from. This relaxed guided walk offers the opportunity to observe ponies in their natural habitat while learning how they live, interact and survive as free-roaming animals.
Together we'll discuss herd dynamics, social behaviour, grazing patterns, seasonal changes, natural movement and the vital role these ponies play within the Dartmoor landscape. You'll gain a greater appreciation of how their physical, behavioural and social needs are met in the wild, helping to build a stronger understanding of what changes when they move into domestic ownership.
Whether you're considering homing a feral pony, already own one, or simply have an interest in Dartmoor's iconic ponies, this promises to be an informative and inspiring evening.
Suitable for Horse & Pony owners, prospective owners, equestrians, conservation enthusiasts and anyone interested in equine behaviour and welfare.
This event forms part of the British Horse Society's new Feral Pony Education Series, delivered in partnership with leading regional charities and equine professionals to promote responsible ownership and lifelong welfare.

Please bring refreshments for the eveneing.
Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear, as the walk will take place over uneven ground.
Long trousers/leggings are recommended due to ticks.
Quiet/well behaved dogs are welcome on short leads. If your dog is prone to barking we recommend that they do not come as they may scare the ponies.
Whilst ever attempt will be made to make sure we locate the local ponies on the evening they are wild and have not read the agenda for the day! So please do bear this in mind.
The car park is a paid car park and takes cash and card - this needs to be paid in addition on the evening.
There are toilets located in the car park.
