Printmaking Woodcut & Lino. with Alexis Neal
Lino and woodcut are among the most widely practiced forms of relief printmaking. In this process, the raised surface carries the image, while the background is carved away to create unprinted areas. A range of cutting tools and abrasives can be used to achieve varied line, texture, and tonal effects. The medium also supports diverse approaches, from single-block prints to multi-block and colour separation techniques, offering strong potential for colour exploration and composition.
Our printmaking courses are designed for both beginner and intermediate students, providing a clear introduction to the possibilities of the medium. The evening class is open to all levels and focuses on building core skills in a supportive, creative environment.
The daytime printmaking is focused on developing a body of work while exploring a variety of printmaking processes at a slightly higher level with critical discussions, fostering individual practices.
Across the year, students are introduced to a range of printmaking processes, working with non-toxic methods and water-based inks. Each term focuses on a different technique, giving a broad and practical overview of the discipline.
The course is hands-on and covers key technical skills, including ink application, colour roll-up, and chine collé, supporting the development of confident and considered printmaking practice.
"For me, it’s about making an impression of something, introducing new ideas and skills that students can include and extend on into their own practice" - Alexis Neal
