Already discovered a love of clay? Our Improvers’ Hand-building Course is designed for those who have completed a beginners’ course or have some previous experience and are ready to build on their skills.
Over six inspiring weeks, you’ll refine your techniques, tackle more ambitious projects and gain a deeper understanding of form, construction and surface decoration. You’ll be encouraged to experiment, solve creative challenges and develop your own style, all within a relaxed and supportive studio environment.
This course is less about following instructions and more about giving you the confidence to make your own ideas a reality.
During the course, we’ll explore:
• Refining hand-building techniques
• Building larger and more complex forms
• Proportion, balance and thoughtful design
• Handles, lids, feet and attachments
• Layering textures and decorative techniques
• Surface decoration using slips, carving and underglazes
• Combining different construction methods
• Planning and completing more ambitious ceramic projects
Every session includes demonstrations, plenty of hands-on making time and individual support from your tutor. Rather than everyone producing the same piece, you’ll work on projects that allow you to develop your own interests.
The course includes:
• Six weekly sessions of 2.5 hours + one final glaze session during clay club
• Small-group teaching with a maximum of eight people
• All clay, tools and equipment
• Glazes and firing
• Tea, coffee and biscuits
• Your finished pieces to collect once fired
Nivå: Intermediate
Attendee Information
We're looking forward to welcoming you to Henfield Pottery!
To help everyone have a relaxed and enjoyable experience, please take a moment to read the information below before your first session.
What to wear
Pottery can be wonderfully messy! Please wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting a little clay on. Closed toe shoes are essential for safety, and we recommend tying back long hair. Short nails can also make working with clay a little easier, but don't worry if yours aren't!
What to bring
You don't need to bring any pottery equipment, we'll provide everything you need.
You may wish to bring:
· An apron (optional)
· A notebook and pen for making notes
· A reusable water bottle
What's included
Your course fee includes:
· Tuition across all six sessions
· Use of studio tools and equipment
· Clay for course projects
· Standard glazes
· Firing of work made as part of the course (within our fair use guidelines)
Arriving at the studio
Please arrive around 5–10 minutes before the start of your session so you have time to settle in before we begin.
If you're running late, don't worry just let us know if you can.
During the course
This course is designed for beginners, so no previous pottery experience is needed.
Everyone learns at a different pace, and our aim is to create a welcoming, supportive and relaxed studio where you can enjoy learning, experimenting and developing your confidence with clay.
Please be respectful of fellow students, tutors and the shared studio space so everyone has the best possible experience.
Accessibility
We want Henfield Pottery to be welcoming and accessible to as many people as possible.
If you have a disability, long term health condition, neurodivergence, injury or anything else that may affect your experience, please let us know before the course begins. Wherever reasonably possible, we'll work with you to make suitable adjustments.
Refreshments
Tea, coffee and biscuits are available during the session. You're also welcome to bring your own drinks as long as they're consumed in our break room.
Collecting your work
Pottery takes time! Your pieces will need to dry before being fired, glazed and fired again.
We'll let you know when your work is ready to collect. This is usually within 3–6 weeks of the final session, depending on drying times and kiln schedules.
