For teachers, teacher trainees + dedicated yoga students
This course is a unique opportunity to further develop key skills that will enable you to work with Ashtanga Yoga students in an inspiring, skilful and authentic way. Become a confident, hands-on teacher by learning the fundamental principles behind safe and beneficial adjustments. Learn to hold and maintain a safe space for transformational practice to thrive and flourish. The 4-day intensive course will cover:
the alignment principles behind safe and effective adjustments
how to give hands-on adjustments
how to modify practice for common injuries and contra-indications
how to establish a safe “ holding space” that facilitates and supports a transformational practice
how to integrate the practices of pratyahara to quiet the senses during dynamic practice
how to guide students toward deep stillness and peace
Intention
Joey’s intention for the course is to impart skills that will help you to become a better teacher, allowing you to more effectively share Ashtanga Yoga with others. The group size for the training is small (max 12), helping you to get more individual help during the course.
Schedule
The scheduled hours do not include a time where you will do your own practice; you may choose to practice beforehand at home or rest your body in preparation for the day. We will be covering a lot of material over the course of these four days, so we will aim to make sure you have time to rest during the day. We'll take an hour's break for lunch each day and aim to take at least two fifteen minute breaks throughout the day. We are in quite a rural location so do make sure you bring lunch and any snacks you might want with you to eat here, as cafes etc. are a bit far away to make it easy to get there and back within an hour and still get to eat and rest.
Course requirements / suitability
Practitioners must have done a fairly regular practice of the primary series, (this does not mean you need to be able to do every pose perfectly). Please get in touch if you're not sure whether this course is suitable for you.
Attendance for Part 2
If you attend weekend one and cannot make the second weekend, you will be allowed to book onto another weekend 2, at another time. Students can only attend weekend 2 if they have completed weekend 1 with us or have attended this course with us before. The content covered in weekend one will cover mostly sun salutations and the first half of primary series, up to the marichyasanas. The content in part 2 is the second half of primary series.
Venue
The course will take place at our home studio which is between Mytholmroyd and Luddendenfoot in the Calder Valley: 9 Stoney Springs Mill, Burnley Road, Brearley, HX2 6DH. Our house is on the near side of the mill, with a wooden bike shed outside with a number 9 on it and an arched doorway. There will be some parking at the mill on the slope as you turn off from the main road (with the field on your left) and sometimes a space opposite our house. There is the possibility of parking on Brearley Lane which is the turnoff next to ours and is a few minutes walk away.
What to Bring
We have plenty of props here, but feel free to bring your own mat or props if you prefer. Do always bring a notebook and pen in case any sessions do involve reflection exercises. It’s a good idea to bring lunch with you as shops and cafes aren’t that near and it’ll make for a more restful lunch break.
Where to Stay
There are many airbnbs and other self-catering rental options around the valley. If you’re here with a car, Sowerby Bridge, Luddenden, Mytholmroyd, Todmorden, Cragg Vale are all within around 20 minute drive of our house in Brearley. There are also B&Bs such as the Hebden Townhouse. If you prefer a hotel, nearby Halifax is the best place to look.
For a cheaper option, the recently refurbished Hebden Bridge Hostel has a variety of different rooms, ranging from £25-£60 per night – (if you arrange to stay with friends in a 6-bed dorm it works out even cheaper than £25 per night). If you are having any trouble finding accommodation, do get in touch with us, we also have friends locally with spare rooms who may be able to accommodate you.
Travel to and from our house
We live in an old textile mill in the Calder Valley, a 5-minute drive from market town Hebden Bridge, in little village called Brearley. It's just off the main road so it's easy to get to by bus, and is about a 25 minute walk from Mytholmroyd train station. It's also got a cycle path and canal running right past us, so is pleasant to get here by bike too. There is parking nearby and full parking info will be sent closer to the time.
