SWBA Ministers' Conference (1-2 March)

This year, our Ministers' Conference will be entirely online due to the restrictions placed upon us due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Please book as soon as possible. This booking is for the whole Conference (1st & 2nd March). There is a charge of £10, for which you can attend as much or as little of the Conference as you like. Live sessions will be recorded – once you’ve paid your £10 you’ll get a link to access these after the Conference. If you’re not able to attend the conference live but would like to access the recordings you’ll need to pay the £10.

We're planning a programme which will run between 9am and 4pm on 1st & 2nd March (with plenty of breaks!). A full programme will be available shortly but here is some information about our Speakers and this year's Conference,

Revd Dr Helen Paynter
Helen is Tutor in Biblical Studies and Coordinator in Theological Education at Bristol Baptist College and a good friend to our Association. She was a nephrologist (kidney doctor) before following God’s call into ministry, and pastored two churches in Bristol before joining the college full-time. Helen has a PhD in Old Testament, with her particular interests being in the narrative portions of the Old Testament. Helen gave the 2018 Whitley Lecture, entitled “Dead and Buried? Attending to the voices of the victim in the Old Testament and today”, and has written a number of publications on themes around suffering, violence and victims in Old Testament narratives and what this has to say to us today.

Revd Dr Craig Gardiner
Craig is Tutor in Christian Doctrine at South Wales Baptist College and a member of the Iona Community. He previously pastored Calvary Baptist Church in Cardiff and before that practised in law. Craig has an ongoing interest in the work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and the interaction of doctrine, spirituality, worship and ethics.

Revd Simon Jay
Simon is a NAM leading the Urban Expression Team in Welsh House Farm, Birmingham; an incarnational Christian community working with local residents of all ages, and a pioneering expression of church that gathers around meal tables, BBQs, fire pits and food. Simon and his wife Rachel have fostered children for 17 years and have a particular interest in foster and adoptive families. In response to Black Lives Matter, Simon is part of a new initiative to set up a multi-cultural theology hub with Bristol Baptist College.

In our main plenary sessions with our speakers we’ll be doing some theological reflection around a range of themes stemming from the year we’ve had. Each speaker will bring their own perspective on the challenges that churches and Christian communities have had to wrestle with, and will help us and challenge us to take some time and space to reflect theologically. We’ve been so busy doing things that we struggle to stop and reflect – that’s what we want to give you the time and the stimulation to do. There’ll be the opportunity for some Q&A with our speakers too.

In addition to our main sessions, there will be a selection of sessions on other themes, including…..

  • Sharing stories and encouragements from around our region
  • Introducing CMD – with Tim Fergusson from BUGB Ministries Team
  • An act of communion together, with breakout rooms for prayer for one another

We’re also able to offer a session with Hannah Fleming-Hill, our Digital Missioner – you will have seen that Hannah has already done a series of webinars for us, focusing on aspects of digital mission and church life, and she’s worked individually with a number of our churches. It would be really helpful to hear from you if there’s a particular area of the digital world you’d find it useful for Hannah to talk about at the conference.

Looking forward to seeing you in March!
