Ancient woodlands and parkland trees such as many of the trees found across Graves Park can be many hundreds of years old and can provide us with information about how they have been used and managed in the past. Such trees are also important habitats for wildlife, from insects to birds, and play an important role in filtering the air we breathe. Something that is perhaps overlooked when regarding trees, are the messages people scratch into the bark. This tree graffiti (known as arborglyphs) can often record the individuals who have engaged with the tree, and the date in which they did it. From declarations of love to simple notes and illustrations, arborglyphs can provide an added insight into the people who have enjoyed the park in the past.

During this survey, we will explore the woodlands of Graves Park and record the prominent trees that we come across to develop a dataset of the parks oldest and most well-regarded trees. The results of the survey will feed into the overall heritage survey data collected as part of the Finding Lost Norton Park: digging deeper for all project. From where it will serve as a permanent regional record of the park’s history and landscape development.

Full training and equipment will be provided.

Please wear sturdy shoes/boots and dress appropriately for the outdoors. The event will take place away from well-established footpaths. Please feel free to bring food and drink.
