This one day course, run in partnership with national housing charity Shelter, provides a complete understanding of when a European Economic Area national is entitled to welfare benefits and tax credits.

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Know who is and isn't covered by European Union law following the Brexit vote;
  • Understand the different residence tests for different benefits;
  • Know which groups have a right to reside;
  • Be able to advise on the Genuine Prospects of Work test;
  • Understand residence rights for workers, self-employed people and people with retained worker status;
  • Understand who has rights as a family member or carer;
  • Know when someone has a permanent right of residency;
  • Understand the additional restrictions which affect Croatian nationals;
  • Be aware of recent developments in legislation and how European nationals are affected.
  • Have access to advice regarding any course-related question for 12 months after the course.

This course is authorised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority as part of their CPD scheme. It is suitable for anyone working with non-British European nationals. Please note the course does not cover the EU Coordination rules.

Participants should have a working knowledge of the benefits system. People who are completely new to the benefits system are advised to attend our Introduction to Welfare Benefits course beforehand.
