Details

Workshop One - Wednesday 24th January 2024
Geography Subject Leadership - subject leadership, curriculum and preparing for Ofsted
What makes an inspiring and resourceful Subject Lead? In this workshop we will explore core aspects of the curriculum and how to support colleagues with their Geographical knowledge and understanding. We'll use the latest Ofsted subject report to help with action planning and inspection preparedness. The workshop will support action planning.

Workshop Two - Tuesday 13th February 2024
Local area study and fieldwork at KS1
Our local areas provide a rich starting point for children’s geographical investigations. Using case study examples from specific places, find out how the key concepts of place, space and scale can help provide a robust framework for developing the core knowledge and skills that will go on to form the bedrock for further learning.

Workshop Three - Thursday 7th March 2024
UK regional area study and fieldwork at KS2
Where is the East Midlands and how does it fit into the rest of the world? Why is it such an important region? This workshop explores our own region and its contribution to local and international life. What makes it so distinctive, how does it compare to other places and how can we use geographical concepts, vocabulary and skills to find out?

Workshop Four - Monday 15th April 2024
America’s regional study at KS2 (focus on the Amazon)
Who 'owns' the River Amazon? Where does it start and where does it go? What makes this river and the surrounding rainforest so significant? What would it be like to live there? Discover amazing facts and unexpected cities in this journey to a place which offers many contrasts - and some surprising similarities to other European regions.

Workshop Five - Wednesday 1st May 2024
Non-European contrasting local study at KS1 -(Focus on Mugurameno village in Zambia)
Where is Mugurameno village in Zambia? What is the landscape and the climate like? How does the life of children and their families there, compare with our local area here? Using Mugurameno as a case study we will see what happens when we apply the key concepts of place, space and scale to a distant locality.

Workshop Six - Tuesday 11th June 2024
Progression in Mapwork
This workshop will explore how children's map understanding can develop through the range of opportunities we offer them. We will be looking at progression in children's environmental awareness, wayfinding abilities, map competencies and skills. We will explore opportunities in and outside the classroom including the use of digital maps.

The workshops will be led by Jackie Zammit, a geography specialist who leads primary geography networks in the West Midlands and London and a consultant with the Geographical Association. Jackie has taught for the Field Studies Council, worked with teachers on development issues and was a regional coordinator for the Global Learning Programme. She is currently an Associate Practitioner with Lifeworlds Learning, supporting outdoor learning and fieldwork at two residential centres and co-producing educational resources for PositiveNegatives, an animation company.
