About the Session

Mantrailing is a sport for all dogs. We welcome all breeds, ages, and temperaments.

By the end of the session, you and your dog will learn:
• What mantrailing is
• How the game works and why dogs love it
• What equipment suits you and your dog
• How to read your dog while trailing
• How to progress your dog after their introduction to mantrailing

Session Length & Structure

Sessions last up to three hours, depending on the number of dogs attending and how long each dog needs. We never rush dogs into the game.
• Maximum of 6 dogs per session
• Handlers are welcome, along with spectators

What to Bring & What to Expect

Clothing & Footwear
Please dress for the weather and terrain. Ground conditions may be uneven or muddy.
• Sensible footwear is essential (boots, wellies, or sturdy trainers)
• Slip-on shoes or flip-flops are not permitted due to safety risks
• Warm clothing and extra water may be needed depending on conditions

Your Dog’s Equipment
• Dogs should arrive on a flat collar or normal walking gear
• If possible, please avoid arriving in a harness, as the harness is an important part of our mantrailing ritual
• If your dog usually walks in a harness or is more comfortable in one, please bring a second harness
• A bandana can also be used as a cue if needed
• Spare harnesses are available on the day

Long Line
You will need a long line between 7–10 metres.
• Biothane or rubber-gripped lines are ideal
• Nylon or lunge-line style leads can be abrasive or heavy for stronger dogs, but may be suitable for introductory work
• Spare lines are available to try on the day

Food & Rewards
Please bring enough food for six trails, stored in small, pocket-sized tubs that your dog can comfortably put their nose into.
• Tubs can be refilled between trails
• Wet, high-value foods work best (e.g. Forthglade, sardines, cat food, cheese, liver cake)
• Even if your dog isn’t normally food-motivated, please still bring food
• Novel foods (things they don’t usually get) are often most exciting

If your dog is not food-motivated, please also bring a favourite toy such as:
• A ball on a rope
• A tug toy

Water & Waiting Between Trails
• Please bring plenty of fresh water for your dog
• Dogs work hard while trailing and should have access to water at all times
• Dogs will wait in vehicles between their own trails
• If your dog finds this difficult, you are welcome to bring a family member to sit with them
• When working in public areas, someone is always left with the vehicles

Scent Article

Please bring a scent article so the other dogs can trail you.
•This should be something you have worn recently (e.g. socks, hats, neck warmers)
• Please place the item in a resealable plastic bag to contain the scent and keep it clean

Feeding Before the Session

Please do not feed your dog immediately before the session.
• We want dogs slightly hungry to help with motivation
• If your dog needs breakfast, please feed half or a small portion only

General Responsibilities
• Please pick up and take all dog waste home with you
