MODES OF MODULATION With Nuria Bowart + Belinda He
In order to manage a fall we must be able to feel where we are in space, and what direction we wish to go. Each choice relies on the understanding of options, and the capacity to manage them. Within the content of the Axis Syllabus we can learn material that helps us to ready ourselves for various options of movement for dancing.
Using tools from the Feldenkrais Method, we harness the capacity of our nervous systems to adapt to situational necessities, allowing for sensitivity to be foregrounded in this playground for emergent adventures in movement. Beginning slowly and gently, we invite states of readiness for introspection, nuanced attention, and spontaneity, fostering the conditions for expansive alertness so that we may approach dancing decisively and precisely.
The Axis Syllabus is a compilation of information regarding human movement from various fields such as anatomy, biomechanics, anthropology and physics. The goal is to find ways of moving that follow the path of least resistance, minimizing excess tension in the body, and thereby decreasing injury potential.
The Feldenkrais Method is a somatic, or body-oriented, intervention designed to help people reconnect with their bodies and learn ways to move with greater efficiency. Through the incorporation of subtle movements and focused attention, this method strives to improve overall human functioning by using the brain’s neuroplasticity, or ability to adapt to sensory input.
