I hold a degree in Early Years Childhood Studies, I've played guitar for over 20 years and I've been working in Nurseries for nearly 13 years. In that time I've introduced my guitar to the children, developing a set-list of songs and activities that they really enjoy.

There is one question that I've heard about 30 times a day in my experience in nurseries, and that is “Keir, have you brought your a-tar in today?”. Whilst some children may struggle to pronounce guitar correctly, I've yet to meet a child who struggles to engage in the music.

Not only do I cover traditional nursery rhymes, but I play and sing more contemporary songs with the children. A current favourite amongst my group is 'Country Roads' by John Denver, with 'Sweet child o mine' by Guns 'n' Roses as a serious contender. Others include Oasis, Blur, David Bowie and the Beatles.

I have found that both children and their parents enjoy these songs, Singing them at home can really help in developing the children's language and creative skills – with songs you might like!
