A three day introduction course for people wanting to venture out in winter conditions.

Three day skills in Scotland with four nights’ accommodation, guiding and food all included.

Ice axe and crampon work
Steep snowy/icy ground
Avalanche awareness
Route selection
Emergency shelter digging
Build up to a full mountain day hopefully bagging a Munro or other high Scottish mountain
Any mountain weekend wouldn’t be complete without some navigation thrown in.
Evening times to ask questions and help with kit.

Arrival is to Tighuish House in Rothiemurchas from 5pm on Thursday 20th February.

Accommodation is twin rooms with ensuite on a shared basis. If you require a room to yourself there is a supplement of £200.

The house has an open fire surrounded by sofas with lots of space for drying kit on radiators.

Food will be provided from Friday morning with a selection of cereals, porridge and toast for breakfast. Lunch is DIY with everything laid out for you to select from, including homemade quiches, pork pies, sandwiches and homemade traybakes for energy. Soft drinks - hot and cold are also provided. I can cater for dietary requirements please be sure to let me know.

Instructions

Kit list.
35-40 litre rucksack minimum
Hydration bladder/bottle for drinking (be aware bladder hoses freeze in winter)
Small flask (optional)
Compass (don’t worry if you don’t have one)
Hat
Buff or balaclava
Ski goggles and sunglasses. (I do have spare goggles please let me know)
Walking poles (preferable with baskets on the bottom, personal preference but make life easier in winter)
Ice axe
Crampons
Helmet (I have these if you do not)
Boots suitable for being in the snow and fitting crampons to (please ask if unsure of your boots)
Dry bags inside rucksack
Waterproof trousers and jacket
Base layer top and bottoms (there is a washing machine if you only have one set)
Walking trousers (quick drying NO jeans or tracksuit bottoms on the hill)
Fleece or softshell jumper/jacket
Primaloft/down warm layer (please note down is no good if wet, primaloft is better)
Spare warm layer for inside rucksack
Personal first aid kit (paracetamol, blister plasters etc)
Gloves- at least three pairs to take on the hill. 2x thinner ones and a large warm over mitt or glove. YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY GLOVES. (I do have spares)
Head torch and spare batteries
Lip balm and sunscreen (you never know)!!!
Warm walking socks
Gaiters
Personal toiletries and towel.

Arrival details;
Please arrive any time from 5pm onwards. If you are going to be very late let me know.
We must be out of the accommodation by 10am on departure morning.
I look forward to spending the weekend with you in hopefully, some great Scottish winter conditions.

*Please eat prior to arrival-on-arrival day, or bring something with you to heat up/cook. There will be snacks for the evening but not a full meal.

Not included;
Travelling to and from the venue. We will also need to travel to our daily venues which aren’t far, you can arrange lift shares between members.
Insurance for personal injury, costs incurred should you need to go to hospital, not arriving due to traffic, vehicle, weather and natural disaster problems or cancellation after the latest date.
Your personal mountaineering clothing and kit - please talk to us about kit hire.
