For beginners to hill walking, or those who have been walking a while using various apps or friends to get by - this intensive day gives you a great introduction to navigation- and shows you that it really is not that scary or complicated.
Although we cover a lot, we start with the basics and very slowly progress throughout the day, building each technique at a time until every single person is ready to move to the next stage.
Based out of Askham (North Lake District), we will cover:
• Mapping options available to us, pros and cons of each - including the different map scales
• Orientating (setting) the map, with and without a compass
• Navigation jargon, "hand railing" ''legs'' ''tick features'' ''catching features''
• An introduction to contour lines
• The basics of using a compass and all the magic it brings (measuring distance off a map, taking and following a bearing)
• Pacing and timing - what it is and why do we use it
• Grid references
This really is a lovely informal and fun day out on the lower hills gaining the knowledge required to really keep yourself on track in the mountains.
It is a great lead up to the Improvers course I run in the higher mountainous areas using the skills to build further confidence.
Maximum group size 10.
Level: Beginner
Please meet me at 08.45 at the swimming pool car park in Askham, near Penrith. Signal is a bit hit and miss there so if you have any problems on route please try to call me an hour prior to arrival time.
You will need to bring a compass, I recommend the Silva expedition 4. I will provide maps.
Please let me know if you do not have a compass.
As this course is outside all day you will need to bring suitable clothing - Walking boots or fell shoes, waterproofs, hat, gloves, spare warm layer, sunglasses, suncream* as well as your lunch and a drink. Gaiters are optional but worth while considering.
We will be out for approximately 6/7 hours, covering a distance of up to 8km on easy terrain.
I look forward to meeting you and helping you become a confident navigation ninja!
