Guided Walking - Helvellyn (no edges)

Details

Helvellyn. Voted as Britain's best mountain really is a wonderful lump, attached to other peaks by long open high land. Sweeping eastwards from the summit are the rocky arms of Striding and Swirral edges. Their reputation precedes them, putting fear into many.

We will leave those for today, choosing instead to ascend this mountain from Thirlmere. A steep but straightforward path leads all the way to the summit, views over Thirlmere ever increasing. Continuing higher above brown cove crags the Trig point eventually comes into sight- and with it the incredible views down the steep eastern face to red tarn. The ridges jut out in front, perhaps now you have seen them you may fancy returning to attempt them another day?

We have many options up here, depending upon the weather and how your legs feel.
Simply return the same way, or drop down to the southern end of Thirlmere with a long forestry track connecting us all the way back to swirls car park. Perhaps you would like to get Nethermost Pike, another Wainwright which is just a stones throw away.

Walking poles are a great help for this route, but not essential.

Distance - 3.5km to the summit. Further distance depending upon our plans from there.
Ascent - 742m to the summit
Time - 6 hours ish
