This is a remote trek to the Base Camp of the world’s fifth highest mountain, Mount Makalu.
We see traditional villages, diverse plants and forests and have superb Himalayan views.
Makalu Base Camp is a remote location in the Himalayas. The area receives few foreign trekkers due to its relative inaccessibility. We trek through the Makalu Barun National Park. This is a wilderness area containing pristine forests and alpine meadows. Along the way, we have incredible views of Makalu and even across to Kangchenjunga, the 3rd highest peak in the world.
Facilities here are basic. They are traditional homes of the people, and we are guests there. We will be camping for the majority of this trip, using teahouses only if there is space. There is no pre booking here. But we can use the space to warm by the burner during the evenings. Bed time is usually early!
The route crosses the remote and fantastically situated Shipton La, plenty of history with this route to learn about and follow in the footsteps of early mountaineers.
This 23 day itinerary has been put together to enable a slow, well acclimatising journey for you to enjoy.
