This one day course is designed to take you off the beaten track, away from footpaths and start getting to grips with contours, tricky mountainous terrain and more techniques to enable safe journeying in the outdoors.
You'll already have a basic knowledge of map and compass, whether from doing our beginner course (or an alternate one), or from your own experiences.
The day starts with a quick refresher to ensure pacing and timings are all fresh in your head before heading 'off piste'.
Throughout the day we will cover
🧭Bearings
🧭Pacing in tricky terrain
🧭Boxing round techniques
🧭Resections
🧭Contours recognition
🧭General confidence building
This is a superb day to increase your skills, knowledge and confidence allowing you further exploration of the mountains with comfort.
You will need to bring a compass, I recommend the Silva expedition 4. I will provide maps.
Please let me know if you do not have a compass.
As this course is outside all day you will need to bring suitable clothing - Walking boots or fell shoes, waterproofs, hat, gloves, spare warm layer, sunglasses, suncream* as well as your lunch and a drink. Gaiters are optional but worth while considering.
*it could be sunny!
Meeting is at 0900 at the Three Shires Stones at the top of Wrynose Pass.
Expect to be out all day until approximately 4pm.
We do require 3 bookings to run this course. You'll be given an update a week prior if there aren't enough people.
