Details

This group is designed for children aged 8-12 years who are confident attending without their parent or carer.

We will spend the day playing, exploring, crafting, and learning in a hands-on way. We will be building dens, self confidence and self esteem, developing practical outdoor skills, social skills and team working, cooking lunch on the campfire, facing challenges, developing connection to nature and most importantly - having fun!

Our activities will be guided by the needs and interests of the children but are likely to include:

  • shelter building
  • fire lighting
  • basic tool use
  • campfire cooking
  • mud kitchen
  • tree swings
  • hammocks
  • natural crafts

In line with our forest school ethos, our group will be small and we will have two forest school leaders and a high adult to child ratio, with no more than 8 children per leader.

Keeping your children happy and safe is our top priority. Our Forest School Leaders are level 3 qualified, enhanced DBS checked, insured, and hold up to date paediatric outdoor first aid qualifications. Our handbook and risk assessments are available upon request.

We will meet for these sessions at 10am in the car park outside the Warley Woods Golf Pavilion (101 Lightwoods Hill, Smethwick, B67 5ED) and walk with the children up to our site. We will return at 3pm to meet parents/carers.

These sessions will take place on our beech tree site, near to the large rocks. Please see the map in the event attachments for how to find us or use What 3 Words: ///cliff.frames.curving

Instructions

Forest school takes place in all weathers, throughout the seasons. Especially during the colder months please ensure you have plenty of layers of clothing to keep your children warm and dry. They can always take layers off if they get too warm. We recommend wellies or waterproof walking boots with warm socks, a waterproof top layer, and long sleeves and trousers all year round to help protect from scratches, stings, sunburn and bites.

Expect your children to get muddy and dirty – we want them to be free to explore and get the full sensory experience at forest school - plus research has shown that playing in mud makes us feel calmer and more relaxed!

We will provide a campfire lunch and treat but please do also send your children with snacks and a drink as playing outside is hungry and thirsty work!

We have hand washing facilities on site and the children will be asked to wash their hands before eating. We will only be walking up to the pavilion to use the toilet at lunchtime, therefore please make sure you child uses the toilet before they arrive in the morning.

Please note your child will not be permitted to use any electronic devices or mobile phones during the session (except to call a parent/carer in an emergency which can be done on the leader's phone if necessary) so it may be advisable to keep these items at home.

If you have any questions you can message us on Facebook or email laura@wildlivesforestschool.co.uk.
