Start with an object. An object that means something to you. Bring it to the room. Together we will look at the object, listen to it, touch it. Then we will look with the camera, listen with the microphones. What is it saying? Emanating? What can film see that we cannot see with our eyes? What can the microphone hear that we cannot hear?
This workshop will make use of 16mm film and specialist microphones in an almost childlike interpretation of the title ‘Documenting the invisible’. Poetic documentary is a practice that seeks to see what is beyond our rational grasp, beyond the veil, to understand the magic in daily life, and this audiovisual workshop is aimed at lifting that veil, even just a little.
The workshops will offer the following:
Sound recording for film
Shooting on Bolex 16mm cameras
Editing for experimental and documentary filmmaking
Feedback and critical support during the process of making a film
Participants will leave after the second session short film of their own.
This workshop is open to anyone with an interest in sound and moving image, 18+

This workshop coincides with George Finlay Ramsay’s exhibition Flesh, Wax & Glass: Three Holy Weeks in Calabria which runs at David Dale Gallery, 20th November 2026 - 23rd January 2027.
George Finlay Ramsay
George Finlay Ramsay is an artist working between documentary and myth.
Much of his work is iterative and spans years, this requires a kind of devotion and discipline that he entirely lacks in his daily life.
He was shortlisted for the Jarman Award 2025 & the Margaret Tait Award in 2023. His work has been presented at PAF Olomouc (CZ), Barbican (UK), The Whitechapel Gallery (UK), Camden Arts Centre (UK), Rupert Residency (LT) and elsewhere.
Tom Fisher
Tom Fisher is a Glasgow based sound artist and musician working primarily under the name Action Pyramid. His projects vary from site-specific sound installations for galleries and museums, to experimental radio works, audio for documentary film and music.
His creative practice involves using sound and composition to facilitate a reconsideration of our surroundings, examining the relationship between ourselves and the more-than-human, and our part in the wider ecologies of landscapes.
