Catalogers ‘speak’ 5 languages at once when describing works in their collections—the catalog code (currently RDA), MARC for encoding, ISBD punctuation (also for encoding), and one or more subject and classification schemes. This bootcamp offers those who would like a refresher, or have inherited cataloging responsibilities for their libraries, a framework for understanding these ‘languages’ so that they may approach this work with confidence. Learn the essential elements of bibliographic description, encoding, subject schema, and classification schema and how they interweave to create bibliographic records. This bootcamp is appropriate for users of any Innovative system.
Course Outline
-Session 1: Demystifying Bibliographic Description -- cataloging codes for bibliographic content creation, bibliographic record sources, structure, and construction
-Session 2: Demystifying Encoding & Bibliographic Modeling -- the alphabet soup of MARC, ISBD, FRBR, and, LRM, oh my! And how codes and models intersect.
-Session 3: Demystifying Subject Schema -- discussion of the purpose, history, and structure of subject schemes in bibliographic records
-Session 4: Demystifying Classification and Call Number Reporting -- discussion of the purpose, history, and structure of classification schemes in bibliographic records
