Resist Techniques for Calligraphy and Lettering

Learn how to use a range of resist mediums and processes that can be applied to calligraphy and lettering. This online workshop begins with masking fluid, watercolour and gouache to create layers of lovely, dappled writing, where each one sits beneath the next. You may use any script you wish, along with a range of tools for different results, and the colour scheme is entirely your choice.

The process involves several stepped stages, so you'll finish with examples of each one to use as future reference, and we will look at some other techniques while each layer dries. These are highly effective and enjoyable processes to add to your repertoire of things to do with writing.

Materials

• Pencil, rubber, ruler, two water pots, kitchen roll, plenty of palettes and old brushes for mixing paint
• Various large and small nibs, including pointed nibs, automatic/ruling/cola pens, etc.
• Large-ish paintbrushes for laying washes (can be round or flat)
• Masking fluid – Pebeo is good, as is Winsor & Newton, but Daler Rowney is not recommended
• Transparent paints, which can be watercolour, Brusho or acrylic, but ensure they are transparent – colours of your choice
• Gouache paints – any colours
• Masking tape
• Several short texts – related subjects or not, as you wish
• Heavy-weight or stretched watercolour paper (approx. 300 gsm), with either NOT or HP surface
• A hairdryer if possible

Other processes will be explained, but you will not need the materials during this session. You can work along with the tutor, or simply watch and have a go afterwards, or catch up with the recording later.
