Why Iyengar Yoga?
Yoga has countless physical and emotional benefits. It has the capacity to bring you to a new level of flexibility, stamina and strength as well as an overall sense of wellbeing and calm.
Iyengar yoga is suitable for people from all walks of life, all ages and with different levels of ability. The attention to correct alignment and the level of support in Iyengar yoga, facilitated by various props (such as bricks, blankets, blocks, bolsters, chairs) is what makes it so accessible to all. It is wonderfully therapeutic for so many issues such as backache, stiff and sore joints, tight hamstrings etc.
Classes are carefully planned to ensure that the sequence of asanas (the Sanskrit term for “pose”) build on the ones before to enable you to work towards poses that you perhaps felt might not be easy or possible. Each asana is held for the length of time needed to begin to fully understand it and to make required adjustments.
The training that an Iyengar yoga teacher undertakes is rigorous and exacting and means that you are in safe hands and your teacher is confident in knowing how to look after your particular needs.
It is often viewed as the “tough” yoga as we do insist that asanas are worked on correctly and with attention to detail/alignment. Getting it right is part of the learning process. In over 25 years of practicing Iyengar yoga, I still find new learning and experience in even the most basic poses. One never gets bored.
