'Run / Move / Breathe' with Kevin McQuaid
Two dates to choose from:
Saturday 11th January, 1pm
Saturday 18th January, 1pm
Open to any runner of any ability - someone who is looking to re-engage or review where they are with their running coming into a new year
The course will be split into 3 parts: pre-run, run, post-run
Pre Run at MYS:
The basics of the breath - mechanics / chemistry / cadence - and how, when and why each can be leveraged in running.
The basics of movement for running - from feet up to the head, looking at how our body influences how we run and breathe - in turn how we can use this knowledge to help us move & breathe in tune with our body as we move.
Run along cliff above Walpole Bay:
Apply some of the pre run movement ideas into practice. Experience & use different breathing practices to understand when & how you would use them within your own running.
Post-Run at MYS:
How to use the breath to help calm the nervous system post run. Combine with posture to help maximise a shift in state. Any questions around the workshop.
Kevin is aware that everyone has a view of where they are on their running journey and can sometimes be intimidated by spending time with what they perceive as "proper runners". His intention is to alleviate those fears. He's got a lot of experience in setting up a space to allow all to take part - which is why he uses an area up to 200m for the running, and bases any activities on time to give all runners the chance to experience the tools he'll be sharing.
Kevin's history:
Ex Fashion industry (17years), retrained as a primary school teacher in 2010. Begun to explore the breath, cold exposure, mediation and movement in 2017. Since then I have investigated and learnt as much as I can about breath-work, breathing practices, and protocols to improve both health and athletic performance. I re-found my love of running, trained more deliberately, all leading to moving better - breathwork being key to this growth. I became very aware that there is a huge gap in coaching runners how breath can and does make a difference to their performance, which lead me to really delve into the breath & running, taking course after course to expand my knowledge. This journey saw me qualify as a personal trainer, an Oxygen Advantage breath coach and a UK Athletics Level 3 Event Endurance coach. More recently I have been looking at movement in greater detail, how the position of the bones play a fundamental role in muscles, working with Gary Ward to deepen my knowledge. I’m currently coaching runners at all levels, from Juniors to adults (from 2h29m marathoners to 5h 30m marathoners)
