Friday CI Class with Joel O'Donoghue "Pull, Push & Initiation from the Tailbone", followed by Jam

Details

In this session we’ll explore pull as a dynamic counterpart to push, using both hands and feet as grappling points to create directional clarity, suspension, and momentum. We’ll work with the tailbone as a powerful initiator—tracking how small shifts at the base of the spine can ripple through the body and into contact.
We’ll move between miniscule weight sharing—the subtlety of leaning, brushing, and catching—and moments of full weight exchange. Through guided explorations and open dancing, we’ll investigate how pull, push, and tailbone-led pathways can expand our shared vocabulary and build trust, responsiveness, and playfulness in contact.

About Joel:
Joel is a performer and choreographer whose work combines physical intensity with subtle gesture, everyday exaggeration, and a playful touch of the surreal. His pieces shift easily between minimalism and the fantastic, creating a quiet humour and inviting audiences into a space where logic loosens and the unexpected feels natural. With a background in both dance and set design, he is interested in adapting work to different environments and in building relationships between movement, light, and sound—working closely with designers to create performances that feel like conversations.

As a performer, Joel has worked with international companies including Luca Silvestrini’s Protein, Ben Wright’s BGROUP, and Hagit Yakira Dance, and appeared as a guest artist with Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal in Masurca Fogo and Viktor. His choreographic work has been shown at venues such as Sadler’s Wells’ Lilian Baylis Studio, The Place, Tramway, TROIS-CL (Luxembourg), and L’Escaut (Brussels). In 2020 he was commissioned by BalletBoyz to create a dance film for an online festival celebrating Sir Ken Robinson.
