Discover the art of marbled porcelain slip-casting

Curious about pottery but not sure where to start? Form & Feast: A Slip-Casting Intro is a chance to explore a specialist ceramic technique in a relaxed, hands-on setting, creating three unique porcelain pieces to use and enjoy at home.

Taught by Bryony Applegate, a ceramic designer with 15 years’ experience, this workshop offers an introduction to the porcelain slip-casting technique she specialises in within her own practice. Bryony creates high-end tableware for Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury homes, and will share the knowledge and techniques behind this fascinating process.

Unlike traditional throwing or hand-building, slip-casting uses liquid porcelain poured into pre-made moulds. It’s a different way to work with clay, allowing you to create refined ceramic forms while discovering how the material behaves, how moulds work and how marbling can transform a simple piece into something unique.

What you’ll learn

The session begins with a demonstration, followed by step-by-step guidance throughout, so you can learn the process at your own pace.

You’ll discover:

What porcelain slip is — what it is, where it is used and why slip-casting is such a useful ceramic technique.
Basic slip-casting — how liquid porcelain is poured into a mould to create a ceramic form.
Using a drop-out mould — understanding how the mould works and how the piece is released.
Marbling porcelain slip — learning how to combine white porcelain with your chosen colour to create a mesmerising swirled effect.
Fettling — refining and finishing your pieces once they have been removed from the mould.

Bryony will guide you through each stage, sharing the specialist knowledge and techniques she uses in her own porcelain practice.

What you’ll make

You’ll create three porcelain slip-cast pieces, choosing any three from a selection of pre-made moulds, including vases, cups and side plates.

Choose from eight base colours in the studio to create your own marbled combination. Each piece will have a white porcelain background with your chosen colour swirled through it, making every set unique.

Depending on the moulds you choose, your finished pieces could become cups to drink from, snack bowls to eat from or bud vases to hold water — giving you the chance to create something both beautiful and useful.

What happens after the workshop?

Once you leave, your pieces will remain at the studio while they dry, are bisque fired, glazed in a transparent food-safe glaze and then high fired.

We’ll contact you when they’re ready to arrange collection or postage, which is available at an additional cost. Please allow approximately 3–4 weeks for the process.
