This one day course run in partnership with national housing charity Shelter focuses on the problems and practical solutions that advisers may need to employ when working with Universal Credit claimants and is based on our extensive experience of working with UC claimants nationally. It is particularly relevant to staff who are about to or have recently begun working in a full service area.

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Know when it is advisable to claim UC or whether a claim to legacy benefits is required;
  • Be able to advise on problems that occur during the claims process including claiming the wrong benefit and claims involving specified (exempt) accommodation;
  • Understand typical eligibility problems including those affecting EEA nationals, students, young people, the claimant commitment and income received in respect of a past period.
  • Be able to tackle delays and decision making errors including the evidencing of rent liabilities and the administration of the Work Capability Assessment;
  • Understand when people are better off and able to make new claims to legacy benefits in the live (gateway) areas;
  • Know when a problem can be resolved by MR/appeal and when it may be necessary to use non-statutory interventions including the Independent Case Examiner;
  • Have explored other practical problems and solutions that affect people claiming UC;
  • Have access to advice regarding any Universal Credit question for 12 months after the course.

This is a practical course. It is delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, group work and exercises, case studies, group discussion and games.

This course is relevant to anyone who works with claimants of working age. Participants should have a basic knowledge of UC and working knowledge of the wider benefits system.
